Our Story

It’s a Monkey love story

In 2007, Head-Monkey met Mama Monkey over a cup of coffee. Their love of coffee grew from that day and the idea that a premium coffee based on direct partnerships, traceable from the farm to cup should be the new standard for coffee lovers everywhere. Life is too short to drink bad coffee so Grumpy Monkey was created to ensure premium coffee from select Colombian farms was available through a subscription or on-demand purchasing. Our coffee is imported directly to us and we roast it locally immediately before shipping to ensure maximum quality and freshness. We wanted a business that put premium love in a cup. In 2020, Grumpy Monkey was born from this love.

How we do it

 We ethically source our premium coffee from a 5th generation coffee farm located in the lush mountains of Huila, Colombia. The direct trade model is the only true win-win farm-to-cup relationship. The farm is located on 25 hectares of land that range between 1450m – 1600m altitude. The coffee trees grow amongst orange, mandarin and banana trees. Sugar cane and tropical fruits such as mango, pineapple and guama adds to the coffee’s unique flavour, distinct sweetness and brightness. It is imported directly to Canada where it is roasted locally, on demand, and shipped to your mailbox. Shipping only roasted beans ensures that freshness and flavour is only released when you grind it prior to brewing. Whether you select our Cheeky Monkey (Medium), Aviator (Dark) or Ape Crazy (Espresso) you can be assured of premium quality and freshness.

Ethically sourced coffee ensures the coffee is obtained in a responsible, sustainable manner and that the workers involved in its production are safe, treated fairly and earn a livable wage. We are a family business that treats our partners as family. Environmental and social impacts are minimized wherever possible to maintain the sustainability of our model. Colombian coffee is where the greatest coffee in world is cultivated, harvested and exported for enjoyment locally in Canada, our single-origin coffee farmers provide consistently outstanding quality in your every cup.

Coffee is at its best when it's freshly roasted, which is why we roast our beans just hours before they're packaged, sealed and shipped to you. Freshly roasted coffee is naturally sweet, not bitter, and offers superior flavour when compared to coffees found at your local grocery store.

Arguably the most important part of making a great cup of coffee is the quality of the beans that go into it. We choose to focus on amazing single origin coffees because we want you to experience how flavour profiles differ based on where in the world they are grown.
